The Easiest Way to Protect your Website from Hackers
It takes 5 minutes to do.
We all know that being secure online is essential. Yet, when it comes to our websites only a small percentage of us are taking the measures to protect our investment.
Hackers don’t discriminate. Putting faith in the fact that you’re a small business with nothing to attack is simply not going to protect you. The fact is, most attacks are automated using special bots that crawl the web looking for vulnerable sites.
So, let’s chat about the easiest, most overlooked way to protect yourself – the user name and password.
Most people often opt for a username and password they can easily remember. Makes sense. Do you know that a hacker can ‘bruteforce’ crack a 10 character password in less than a day? Can you imagine how quickly they could crack your birthday, dog’s name, or favourite colour?
Here are some tips and tools you can use to make sure your website is protected.
A FEW TIPS TO REMEMBER
- Don’t use personal information as a password.
- The longer the password the better. 12 characters or more is ideal.
- Adding numbers and characters adds incredible security.
- Never use a password that is the same as your username.
- Create a unique username and not the default that some platforms provide.
- Be sure to use both upper and lower case letters
- Change your password regularly.
CRACK MY PASSWORD
Find out how long it would take to crack your current password using this free (and safe) online tool.
The best password is one that is generated and ensured to be safe.
STRONG BUT MEMORABLE
So its great to have a strong password, but its even better to be able to remember it. Try creating a phrase that is unique and memorable for you. For example “My kid takes bus route 17 from Queens Street! It costs $2”. So the password becomes Mktbr17fQS!Ic$2
Viola! Strong and memorable. And no, that’s not my super secret personal password 🙂
